Stamped concrete patterns for Middle Tennessee homes
- Ashlar slate: cut-stone rectangles, the classic patio pattern.
- Flagstone and fieldstone: irregular stones that sit well next to a limestone wall or a garden.
- Brick and cobble: borders, walkways and driveway aprons.
- Wood plank: a deck look with no boards to rot.
A plain broom-finished field with a stamped border gives much of the look for less money.
How stamped concrete is colored and patterned
- Color is mixed into the concrete, broadcast on the fresh surface, or both.
- A release agent, often a darker second color, keeps the mats from sticking and settles into the grooves.
- The crew presses the mats in while the concrete is still workable. It's a timed job, so experience matters.
- Joints are cut along the pattern, the surface is washed, and the sealer goes on once the slab has cured.
Keeping stamped concrete looking new
- Reseal when it needs it. Typically every 2 to 3 years in sun and traffic, 4 to 5 years with lighter use (American Society of Concrete Contractors). Sealing every year causes buildup.
- Keep de-icers off it the first winter. According to the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA), a new slab should get no de-icing chemicals in its first winter, and only light use after that.
- Wash it gently. A broom and a hose do most of the work.
- Add grip where feet get wet. Slip-resistant additive in the sealer for pool decks and steps.
