How a concrete driveway is built, step by step
- Mark buried lines first. Before anyone digs, Tennessee 811 needs a locate request: at least three working days' notice for a normal request. The contractor files it.
- Remove the old driveway. The old driveway is broken out and hauled away.
- Base. The ground is graded, soft spots dug out, and base material laid and compacted. With limestone close to the surface in parts of Murfreesboro, this is the step that matters most.
- Set forms and reinforcement. Forms set the shape and the slope; rebar, wire or fibers go in if specified.
- Pour and finish. Concrete is placed, leveled, finished with a broom texture for grip, and jointed.
- Curing. Kept moist or covered for at least 3 to 7 days, as the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association advises.
Concrete driveway thickness, joints and slope
| Detail | What to ask for | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Thickness | Cars and pickups: 4 inches. Light trucks: 5 to 6 inches. Heavy trucks: thicker still. | Virginia Ready Mixed Concrete Association |
| Joint spacing | At most 24 to 36 times the thickness of the slab (about 10 feet apart on a 4-inch slab) | National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA), joints guide |
| Joint depth | At least a quarter of the slab thickness, never under 1 inch | NRMCA, joints guide |
| Curing | At least 3 to 7 days | NRMCA, curing guide |
| Slope | Away from the garage and the house, toward the street or yard | Common practice |
Widening a driveway: the City's right-of-way permit
The City of Murfreesboro requires a right-of-way permit for "any work within City Right-of-Way (ROW)", and it lists "widening/expanding residential driveways" among that work. What to know:
- The permit comes from the City's Engineering Department, applied for through its online project portal. A residential driveway application needs a plan or sketch of the work.
- The fee is $50 per street affected. A surety (a bond that guarantees the work) may be required. The fee doubles if work in the right-of-way starts before you apply.
- On a state road, you need both a Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) permit and a City permit.
- Not sure? The City's Engineering Department, 615-893-6441, will tell you.
In unincorporated Rutherford County, the County's building questions page (FAQ) says no permit is needed for a concrete or asphalt driveway, as long as you don't encroach on your neighbor's property. In Smyrna, cutting a driveway across a curb or sidewalk needs a permit from Public Works. More in the permits and licenses guide.
How long to wait before you drive on it
Wait at least seven days before you drive on it (Virginia and Iowa ready-mixed concrete associations). The Virginia association says heavy trucks should wait at least six months. Through its first winter, use sand rather than de-icing chemicals: NRMCA advises avoiding de-icers in a slab's first winter.
